Our Puppet Process

Talk about a learning curve!

Auditions

120 students attended the preliminary auditions the first week of school. All worked in teams using silks. 60 students were called back and asked to read from the script. Of these, 10 were cast: 6 men and 4 women.

Field Trip to Austin

In November, I took a small group to Austin to see Trouble Puppet's production of Toil and Trouble, a two-hour puppet version of Macbeth.

During the afternoon, the students had a short workshop with Artistic Director Connor Hopkins covering mechanisms and manipulation.

Temp Heads

Knowing that the "puppet team" was many weeks from finishing our real heads, we created temporary heads using 6" paper mache ostrich eggs.

The actors designed their own and used them until tech week.

Master Classes

In March, Nathan Lahay, a Sam alum and member of Trouble Puppet, came to Huntsville and provided two evenings of master classes. During this time, we focused on technique, focus, and ensemble building.
